Red vinyl. Black patent leather. A studio backdrop so dark it swallowed the edges of the costume and left only the subject and the light.
The devil cosplay is a genre that has been done many times and rarely done well. Done well, it requires a costume that commits to its own logic, a subject who inhabits the character rather than performing it at arm’s length, and a photographer who understands that the black studio background is not a backdrop but a collaborator. All three conditions were met in this session.

The Hero-tier frames arrived in a six-image burst. The specific quality that makes them exceptional is not the costume or the lighting, both of which are excellent, but the expression: completely still, completely in character, completely present.

Horror Cosplay — Ivy, November 2024
Platinum blonde wavy hair. Pale foundation. Blood-stained gauze wrapped around the head and shoulders. A tattered beige dress with the specific quality of fabric that has been aged deliberately and convincingly.
The horror cosplay session is the harder test. Horror cosplay requires subtlety, patience, and a willingness to sit in discomfort while the camera finds the right angle. This session found it multiple times.

The first sequence used blood-stained gauze wrapped around the head and shoulders over the platinum blonde hair. Shot against grey seamless, the pale skin and the white gauze and the grey background sat in the same tonal range — the blood providing the only saturated note in the frame.

THE KNIFE SEQUENCE — SECOND LOOK
The second look introduced a blood-splattered kitchen knife and white stiletto heels. The seated frames on the grey studio floor with the knife held loosely — blood-stained dress, white heels — is the session at its most fully resolved. The character is completely present.

Marilyn Monroe Cosplay — Bella, November 2025
Platinum blonde waves styled in a voluminous wave. Winged liner. Glossy red lips. A double strand of pearls, a black fur stole, a metallic silver halter dress, and a saturated red seamless backdrop. Bella didn’t need the full Marilyn to inhabit the character — but she arrived with it anyway.

Creative Photography for Musical Theatre — OBMT, January 2026
A full-day creative session with Oxford Brookes Musical Theatre Society. Twenty-plus members. A white seamless studio. An afternoon that began with group headshots and ended with something considerably more ambitious: acting-inspired character portraits, theatrical duets, and the kind of session that demonstrates what happens when a photographer and a group of performers trust each other enough to go somewhere unusual.
All black clothing. All white backdrop. And then a sheep costume. And then someone put a yellow rose in his mouth.
